Two Events Taking Place Wednesday to Promote Bicyclist Safety, Support Injured Riders

August 12, 2015 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

sips for cyclingJAMESTOWN – Residents are being invited to take part in a couple of activities Wednesday to show their support for two bicyclists who were recently injured after being hit by a distracted driver last month.

On July 18 the two women cyclists were participating in a charity bike ride when they were struck head on by a van on W. 8th Street. To help pay for their medical costs and also raise awareness for bicyclist safety in Chautauqua County, two events are happening in Jamestown this afternoon and evening.

The first ever “Roll for Respect” will happen rain or shine and will involve a slow-roll bike ride leaving Jamestown City Hall at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday for a 2.5 mile cruise through Jamestown.

Organizers say the ride is the first of its kind in Jamestown, which they say is a city that lacks cycling infrastructure. They say the ride is to promote awareness of cyclists on the road, mutual respect, and a reminder not to drive distracted. Any rider can participate, but they are asked to follow rules of the road and those under 14 must wear helmet per state law.

A “Sips for Cyclists” fundraiser will also take place Wednesday at Brazil Craft Wine and Beer Lounge, located at E. Fourth St. Jamestown.

The event is promoted as a fundraiser to support the injured cyclists, help cover medical bills and to raise awareness about distracted driving and the need for more bicycle infrastructure.  25 percent of all sales from the entire evening go to support the cause and from 5 to 8 p.m. there will be complimentary appetizers, raffle drawings, and other fundraising.
