JAMESTOWN – Jamestown is turning the city of champions.

On Saturday the Jamestown High School football team (Section VI champions) won the 2014 NYS Class AA Championship by defeating Newburgh Free Academy (Section IX) by a score of 41 to 20. The game was played at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Junior quarterback Nikk Holland scored three TDs for Jamestown and team captain Zack Panebianco excelled on offense, defense and special teams to led JHS to its fourth state title in football and its first in 14 years.

Holland threw for 246 yards and a touchdown while running for 138 yards on 15 carries – three of which were for touchdowns. Panebianco caught six passes for 125 yards and a score. And Jamestown’s defense was led by senior Kyle Liuzzo’s 13 tackles and two sacks. Sophomore Devan Jackson scored twice in a 15-second span in the first quarter – once on offense and then by stripping the ball and returning it for a TD on special teams.

It was the first state championship for coach Tom Langworthy, who just completed his seventh season with the team.

Jamestown Superintendent Tim Mains has announced a special rally will take place at Tracy Plaza in downtown Jamestown at 3:30 tomorrow this afternoon to celebrate the championship. The entire community is encouraged to attend.

The high school football championship marks the second state title the school has won in 2014. last month the JHS Marching Band also was crowned state champions. Also last spring the JHS basketball won the Section VI title and made it all the way to the state championship game, losing Green Tech.
