Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to Face Corruption Charges

ALBANY – The New York Times is reporting that federal authorities are expected to arrest New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) on corruption charges later today.

The newspaper says it is unclear what charges Silver would face but say the case stems from payments he received from a small law firm that specializes in seeking reductions of New York City real estate taxes.

The report also says that its unclear just how much money Silver received.

The Times says Silver did not list “the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state, as required.”

The New York Times revealed the arrangement in an article late last year and reported that the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan was investigating the arrangement.

The investigation got its start as part of a Moreland Commission panel Governor Andrew Cuomo established during his first term and then abruptly shutdown. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara took the records of the panel’s work and pursued several incomplete investigations.

Silver has been leader of the Assembly for more than two decades, shared the stage with Cuomo and other state leaders during Cuomo’s State of the State address on Wednesday.
