CITY POLICE CONTINUE SEARCH FOR KIDNAP SUSPECT
Jamestown police continue their investigation into the report of a man who abducted a 12-year-old Jamestown girl from her home early Friday morning. Police say the man drove her to a deserted road in the town of Poland near Kennedy before she eventually escaped and found help at a nearby residence.
Authorities are now asking the public’s help in tracking down the kidnapper and encouraging people in southern Chautauqua County to exercise caution and lock their doors.
The alleged abductor is described as a thin, white male, with blond hair, in his mid-20s to 30s and 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-9. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Jamestown police at 483-7537.
DEER HARVEST CONSIDERED IN OTHER COMMUNITIES
The overpopulation of deer in local municipalities may lead to more harvesting programs. That from a report in this morning’s Post-Journal. In January, the state Department of Environmental Conservation released 50 permits to Celoron officials to help alleviate the deer problem in the village. Four approved hunters killed 32 deer during the program. Now, this program or a similar one may be done in other municipalities. Other municipalities looking into the program are the Village of Lakewood and the town of Ellicott. The DEC says it is willing to work with area municipalities that want to run a deer harvesting program.
COUNTY LEGISLATURE COMMITTEES MEET TODAY
It’s committee week in the Chautauqua County Legislature, with two of the panels meeting later today to discuss and finalize several items on each agenda.
The legislature’s Administrative Services Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Gerace Office Building. The highlight of today’s meeting will be a resolution to extend the sales tax rate of 7.5 percent in Chautauqua County through 2012, along with continuing the occupancy tax and amusement charges. County lawmakers were hoping to be able to increase the sales tax by another quarter of a percent, but the request was turned down in Albany. Instead, the state legislature would only commit to maintaining the current sales tax rate. County lawmakers must now formally approve extending the 7.5 percent rate for another year.
The legislature’s Public Facilities Committee is also meeting today at 4 p.m. in Mayville with a light agenda.
JAMESTOWN CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEES MEET TODAY
Jamestown lawmakers will also meet today in committee. The city council’s public works committee and finance committee are both meeting at 7 p.m. to discuss lifting the city’s hiring freeze in order to bring on a new mechanic at the DPW. And the public safety committee will meet at 7:15 to discuss several resolutions, including giving approval for The Q restaurant and nightclub on the corner of 2nd and Cherry Streets to host a Buffalo Bills season-opener tailgate party with portions of the event – including a beer tent and barbeque – to take place outdoors.
PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR THE BABE RUTH WORLD SERIES
Participants are still being accepted for the 2011 Babe Ruth World Series Parade on Saturday, August 20th. Parade line-up will begin at 8:00am along West Third Street between Porter Avenue and Hallock Street. Stepping off at 9:00am, the parade will travel East on Third Street to Tracy Plaza. Jamestown’s own “Mr. Baseball,” Russ Diethrick will be the 2011 parade announcer.
The parade will kick-off the 13-15 year old Babe Ruth World Series that will be held in Jamestown Aug. 20 through 27 at Diethrick Park.

INFINITY ANNOUNCES INTRODUCTION TO ART CLASS
The Infinity Visual and Performing Arts program will hold an introductory to art class starting later this month for children 2 to 5 years old.
All classes will be held at the Infinity Center on 3rd Street. The class is designed for young children focusing on the process of art making and the experience of the child. Each class features a famous artist with children making an art project inspired by how that artist worked or elements they used in their artwork.
The “Explore Art” class is instructed by Liz Jones and will be held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, starting August 27. Children 2 and 3 years old will meet at 9 a.m. and children 4 to 5 years old will meet at 10:15 p.m. For more information call (716) 664-0991.
