Parks Manager Dan Stone said 10 trees were being planted as part of that recognition, “The four that we will finish off planting shortly were purchased last fall thanks to a grant from the New York State Urban Forestry Council. We were awarded this grant simply because we are a Tree City USA.”

Four of the trees included two ‘Flax-Mill’ Majesty Sugar Maple Trees, which are the state tree, and two ‘Worplesdon’ Sweetgum Trees.

Stone said there are four core standards that must be met to become and maintain being a Tree City USA. The first is to have a tree board, which is fulfilled by the City’s Parks Commission. Stone said the second is to have a tree care ordinance, “Ours was first established in 1981. It was written so well then we still use the same one with very little changes 40 years later. Number three, a Community Forest program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, which, thanks to our mayor and city council, that is and has been taken care of every year for the last 40 years.”

The fourth requirement is to have an Arbor Day celebration with a proclamation, which was read by Mayor Eddie Sundquist.

A “40 Years of Tree City USA” wood carving was presented at the ceremony. The carving was done by Vince Liuzzo out of wood from one of the West Third Street Oak trees.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Special Event Permit Not Required for Saturday’s Rally to Recover Jamestown https://www.wrfalp.com/special-event-permit-not-required-for-saturdays-rally-to-recover-jamestown/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=special-event-permit-not-required-for-saturdays-rally-to-recover-jamestown https://www.wrfalp.com/special-event-permit-not-required-for-saturdays-rally-to-recover-jamestown/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 14:21:44 +0000 http://www.wrfalp.com/?p=22961 JAMESTOWN – A special event permit will not be needed for a rally against drug addiction scheduled to take place this weekend in Jamestown.

Monday night the Jamestown City Council’s Public Safety received an update on the Rally to Recover Jamestown event, which is being organized by local resident and advocate Chanda Lynn Germain.

Last week the committee denied a permit for the event to take place at the Gorenson Bandshell in Allen Park, due to concerns with the number of people expected to be on hand, parking, and lighting.  The committee suggested the event be moved to the Allen Park Ice Rink and asked Germain to return this week for Monday night’s meeting.

However, as WRFA reported last week, Germain has instead opted to partner with the Sherward Arts Complex on E. 2nd Street to hold her event. And according to Jamestown Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Chet Harvey, a special event permit is not needed if the event is being held indoors on private property.

Harvey explained to the committee that his staff has been working with the venue operators – Vince Liuzzo and Justin Miller – to ensure the space is code compliant. That includes making attendees aware of sufficient exiting, providing a 15 foot-wide emergency lane, and making sure the maximum number of attendees doesn’t exceed 99 person.

We wanted to make sure it has sufficient exit, and they need to be limiting the number of people that can come through the door. They also have to post a fire watch, who has to be there anytime a person comes into the building. There’s a lot of specifications the fire watch person will have to comply with and they’ll be doing periodic checks throughout the event,” Harvey explained.

Harvey said that if the rally is found to not be in compliance with city or state fire code for any reason during the event, the fire department will work with the organizer to correct the issue, rather than shutting the event down.

The Rally to Recover Jamestown is a free event that is being held to raise awareness about drug addiction in the community as well as the resources that are available, along with a focus on what more can be done. It will run from 1 to 11 p.m.

The Sherwood Arts Complex is located at the Former Dahlstroms Building on E. 2nd Street.

Rally to Recover Jamestown Event Relocates to Sherwood Arts Complex https://www.wrfalp.com/rally-to-recover-jamestown-event-relocates-to-sherwood-arts-complex/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rally-to-recover-jamestown-event-relocates-to-sherwood-arts-complex https://www.wrfalp.com/rally-to-recover-jamestown-event-relocates-to-sherwood-arts-complex/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 13:11:25 +0000 http://www.wrfalp.com/?p=22924 JAMESTOWN – A new location has been selected for the Rally to Recover Jamestown event scheduled for later this month.

On Monday night the Jamestown City Council’s public safety committee informed the event organizer, Chanda Lynn of Jamestown, that they would not be able to approve a special event permit for the Rally to take place at the Allen Park Bandshell on Saturday, Sept. 23, citing public safety concerns including a large volume of traffic and people, as well as the event running past 9 p.m.

As a result, Lynn was left scrambling trying to find a new venue. Although the committee recommended the event be located to the Allen Park Ice Rink, it also came with additional expenses that Lynn said she might not be able to raise in a short period of time.

Instead, Lynn announced on Wednesday afternoon that the event would be relocated to the Sherwood Arts complex on E. Second St. in the city.

The complex is run by Justin Miller and Vince Liuzzo, both of Jamestown, who offer the space for projects and events that unite the community.

Rally to Recover Jamestown is an event that geared to raise awareness about recovery from chemical dependency in the Jamestown area. It will feature guests speakers and live music, along with representatives from service organizations to help those seeking more information on the recovery process.

We’ll have more details on the event during our Community Matters program which airs today at 5pm on WRFA.

JAMESTOWN – Hundreds of volunteers from all over the greater Jamestown area will be coming together on Saturday morning for the annual Hands On Jamestown.

The community-wide effort takes place each spring, with a focus on cleaning and beautifying the streets of Jamestown. During the event, volunteers assist the City of Jamestown Parks Department with flower planting, litter collection, raking, sweeping, and other clean-up activities.

Chris Breen with the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation says the annual event allows residents to get together and focus on cleaning up the city now that warmer weather is here.

“It’s a huge collaboration with our Jamestown Parks Department, Department of Public Works, and the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities,” Breen said. “It’s really nice. One day we all come together for the same mission. We don’t encourage people to just write on their calendar to cleanup Jamestown one day out of the year. We encourage them to do it everyday of the week. But I think we have a larger impact when we do get everybody together for one day.”

Hands On Jamestown will start at 8 a.m. on Tracy Plaza with a check-in that includes food and supplies being offered to participants. The clean-up effort will then get underway and continue until noon.

For more information on Hands On Jamestown or to see the map and register for the event, visit jamestownrenaissance.org or call 664-2477 ext 226.

Following the community-wide clean up effort, a Hands on Jamestown After Party event will take place from noon to 3pm and the Sherwood Arts Complex – which will feature food, live entertainment, and local artists.

“We’re going to have local art, live music, great food from Falconer Foods, coffee and treats from Labyrinth Press Company, and plenty of opportunities to get involved,” explained Vince Liuzzo of Sherwood Arts. “People can also learn about our summer-long Street Art Showdown competition. So bring your lawn chairs and enjoy meeting the people who want to make a positive change in the community.”
