Veterans Day is the Last Statewide Free Fishing Day of 2022 https://www.wrfalp.com/veterans-day-is-the-last-statewide-free-fishing-day-of-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=veterans-day-is-the-last-statewide-free-fishing-day-of-2022 https://www.wrfalp.com/veterans-day-is-the-last-statewide-free-fishing-day-of-2022/#respond Fri, 11 Nov 2022 12:00:38 +0000 https://www.wrfalp.com/?p=48106

DEC fisheries biologists conduct surveys to assess black bass populations throughout the state

Today is the last statewide Free Fishing Day of the year.

Governor Kathy Hochul said the day was chosen as part of Veterans Day. She said fishing is considered one of the most therapeutic outdoor activities, making it an ideal activity for veterans, those currently serving in the military, and all New Yorkers looking to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

During designated Free Fishing Days, anglers do not need a fishing license to fish New York’s fresh waters. All other fishing regulations are in effect. For more information on Free Fishing Days visit the Department of Environmental Conservation‘s (DEC) website at https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html

New York State residents who also qualify as active-duty military members (see https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6097.html for details) may receive a free fishing license, as well as a free hunting and/or trapping license, provided they have the appropriate hunter and/or trapper education. Veterans with a service-related disability of 40 percent or more (annual proof required from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) can get reduced fee hunting and fishing licenses and preference for Deer Management Permits.

The State DEC reminds anglers they can now enjoy New York’s trout stream fishing resources year-round. Anglers are required to use only artificial lures and immediately release trout they catch. The catch-and-release season applies to inland trout streams only. Anglers should consult the DEC’s regulations guide for regulations associated with lakes and ponds that harbor trout before fishing.

Council also will review a local law that authorizes the use of video-conferencing for public meetings. According to the staff report, the local law is required under Public Officers Law 103 in order for the city to continue having hybrid meetings or meetings over video-conference.

The report said that video-conferencing has been a “valuable asset to public meetings, and can create an increase of engagement with the public.”

Council will presented with a resolution to purchase a new Fleet maintenance truck for the Department of Public Works in the amount of $52,534. The staff report said the current truck had been hit by another vehicle in October, causing frame damage to the truck. There were no injuries in the collision. The truck had been intended to replace a 20-year old service truck that is aging and severely rusted. The contingency fund would be used for the purchase.

And the Public Safety Committee will review a special event permit application for a Veterans Day Ceremony that’s set to take place on the corner of Third and Main Streets on Friday, November 11th.

The Police and Fire Departments will present their proposed budgets to the full council at 6:30 p.m. in the Police Training Room on the fourth floor of City Hall. Committee meetings will immediately follow that presentation with the full work session beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The meetings are open to the public with the budget and work session also being live streamed on jamestownny.gov.

New York- Governor Andrew Cuomo marches in Veterans Day Parade in New York City on Nov. 11, 2013.

ALBANY – New York State is rolling out a new tax credit supporters say will make it easier for thousands of military veterans to find work.

On Veterans Day, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the beginning of a promotional effort by New York State’s Division of Veterans’ Affairs to highlight a $74 million tax credit, which will encourage employers to hire New York’s post-9/11 veterans who are currently not employed.

Governor Cuomo stated that all New Yorkers owe a special debt of gratitude to those who’ve served in the armed forces in the years since 9/11.

Beginning on Veterans Day, New York State’s Division of Veterans’ Affairs will send direct informational mailings about the tax credit to organizations committed to hiring veterans. Additionally, the Division of Veterans’ Affairs will promote the tax credit to Veterans organizations and schools accepting Post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefits, and deliver printed pamphlets describing the tax credit for distribution by more than 150 Veterans Service Organizations and Counselors.

In New York and across the country, Unemployment rates for post-9/11 veterans are noticeably higher than the unemployment rates for their non-veteran counterparts. According to the Governor’s office, there are approximately 75,000 post-9/11 veterans living in New York State today.

The tax credit will take effect on January 1, 2014.

As part of his Veterans Day announcements, Governor Coumo also said that New York will soon host a Veterans and Military Families Summit, to be held in December in Albany. He said the event will continue the state’s work to support veterans and the military community by identifying new ways to serve veterans. More details regarding the Summit will be released in the near future, including how veterans and their families can participate.
