Tammy Sawyer

JAMESTOWN – Jamestown police have released the name of the driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that took place April 16 on Foote Ave. in front of the UPMC Chautauqua hospital.

City police say 52-year-old Tammy Sawyer turned herself in on Wednesday, May 1 following an investigation.  She was charged with felony leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, failing to yield to a pedestrian, and speed not reasonable and prudent.

Sawyers arrest came two weeks after the incident occurred and also after Jamestown Police on Tuesday discovered the vehicle in question – a Silver Toyota SUV – along with the driver on the south side of Jamestown.

“Investigators from the Jamestown Police have located the vehicle and operator from the hit and run accident from April 16. The vehicle is being impounded for processing and charges against the operator are pending. Details on the charges will be released when charges are placed,” Jamestown Police Captain Robert Samuelson said on Tuesday. “The vehicle was located after a tip came into a law enforcement officer from an area agency who contacted our office on Jamestown. We thank everyone for the tips and efforts that were put forth in the community.”

On the evening of April 16 a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while walking in the crosswalk on Foote Ave. in front of UPMC Chautauqua. The victim was seriously hurt and is still being treated for a serious leg injury.

Police had been searching for the vehicle since then and asked for the public’s help on a couple of occasions – first releasing a still frame photo of the vehicle captured from a nearby camera. Earlier this week police then released the actual video of the incident and added that it may have sustained some damage in the front driver side.

Sawyer is currently in the city jail awaiting arraingment.
