WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) has announced the creation of a third high-tech manufacturing hub that is opening thanks to a law he sponsored two years ago.

The newest Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute hub will open in Los Angeles and is made possible through Reed’s Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act (RAMI), approved by congress in 2014.

The new hub will bring together nearly 200 partners from across industry, universities and non-profits from over 30 states. The focus will be on the development of sensors and digital process controls that can improve efficiency and techniques in advanced manufacturing.

Last year, Western New York became the home of the first advanced manufacturing site following the enactment of Reed’s bill. The focus of the hub in Rochester is photonics, or the study of light, which can be used for medical technology, fiber optics for telecommunications systems and lasers.

According to Reed’s office, RAMI directs the Department of Commerce, and other agencies, to develop high tech manufacturing hubs throughout the nation, which are designed to encourage innovation and economic development. Reed says the ultimate aim of the law is to create the jobs of the 21st Century in the United States and revitalize America’s manufacturing industry.

WASHINGTON – Tom Reed’s (R-Corning) Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act, or “RAMI,” passed the House this week with a strong showing of support from Members on both sides of the aisle.

According to a release from Reed’s office, the Corning Republican has been an advocate for U.S. manufacturing through his bill to create manufacturing innovation hubs across the country. He’s also spent the last year meeting with district manufacturers for input and educating Members of Congress on the need to stay on the cutting edge of manufacturing in America.

Reed and Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) introduced RAMI in an effort to work toward re-establishing the United States as the global leader in manufacturing. The bill creates a national network of regionally-based hubs to improve the competiveness of American manufacturing and increase U.S. production. The hubs are public-private partnerships among colleges and universities and manufacturers of all sizes designed to bridge the country’s skills gap and bring research and development and commercialization back to the forefront of American manufacturing.

With 100 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House and broad industry support, Reed’s bill cleared the final hurdle in July for today’s vote in the House, passing the House Committee on Science in a unanimous vote. Reed said that this week’s overwhelming vote in the House bodes well for a vote in the Senate.

JAMESTOWN – A federal bill sponsored by area Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) and designed to provide a boost for manufacturing has cleared a hurdle in the House.

According to a release from Reed’s office, the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act – or “RAMI” – has been approved in the House Committee on Science and now awaits action on the House floor.

The bill creates a national network of regionally-based hubs to improve the competitiveness of American manufacturing and increase U.S. production. The hubs are public-private partnerships among colleges and universities and manufacturers of all sizes designed to bridge the country’s skills gap and bring research and development and commercialization back to the forefront of American manufacturing.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) is offering more feedback on President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union address. The Corning Republican said he was pleased to see a manufacturing bill he has co-sponsored being highlighted in the President’s address Tuesday night.

During the speech, the President Obama pledged support for the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act (RAMI), an initiative both Reed and Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) introduced in the House last summer, with a companion bill introduced in the Senate by Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

Reed said the bill has been a top priority for his office during his current term and he was happy the president acknowledged it Tuesday night. “He talked about desire to grow advanced manufcacturing hubs and manufacturing jobs in the United STates, to me, that is something I am very excited to be a part of and will continue to push forward to get these bills out of the house and senate and into the white house and into law, to take advantage of that manufacturing rebirth of making it here and selling it there and I’m going to push on that agenda.”

The RAMI Act will create a regional network of manufacturing institutes across the country designed to commercialize research and development into manufactured products, train an advanced manufacturing workforce and support manufacturers of all sizes. The bill creates public-private partnerships to bring together manufacturers, businesses and universities to coordinate resources.

Jamestown Community College has had its own Manufacturing Technology Institute in place for the past decade and Reed toured the facility in 2013 while doing research prior to finalizing the RAMI bill.

Chautauqua County’s representative in Congress is helping to introduce a bipartisan bill that would create a regional network of manufacturing institutes across the country.

On Friday, Congressmen Tom Reed (R-Corning) joined democrat Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) in announcing the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (RAMI). The bill creates a network of regional institutes across the country designed to commercialize research and development into manufactured products, train an advanced manufacturing workforce, and support manufacturers of all sizes.

According to Reed, the goal of the bill is revitalize American manufacturing, which he says is a major key to revitalizing the country’s economy.

The network would be funded through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Institutes are chosen for participation based on a merit-based review process.

A companion bill was also introduced in the Senate.
