Dr. Neil Flory, director of the Jamestown Community College Music Department, discusses the two free winter concerts in December that are open to the public.

The choir and concert band will showcase a variety of music styles during a combined performance at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Jamestown Campus student union. The event will also feature special guests The Pearl City Jazz Ensemble directed by Ralph Rasmusson.

Julie Costantini directs the JCC choir, while the concert band performs under the direction of Chris Wakefield.

The student union will also host Winter Jam!, featuring JCC’s rock ensembles under the direction of Bill Eckstrom at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9. The concert will also feature special guest band The Way Back.

Admission is free to both concerts, which will also be streamed live on the SUNY JCC YouTube page.

Dr. Neil Flory from the Jamestown Community College Music Department stops by the studio to share details about the Jamestown Community College choir and concert band performances at 7 p.m. on May 8 in Scharmann Theatre.

Julie Costantini will direct the choir. The concert band performs under the direction of Ralph Rasmusson and associate director Richard Lundquist.

Dr. Flory also discusses Spring Jam!, featuring JCC’s rock ensembles under the direction of Bill Eckstrom, at 7 p.m. on May 10.

WRFA’s Jason Sample talks with Neil Flory and Ralph “Raz” Rasmussen about the The Mark Filsinger Eleventet jazz ensemble, which will headline JCC’s Jazz Fest on April 22.

Admission to the 7 p.m. performance in Scharmann Theatre is $4, general public, $3, area students and senior citizens, and $2, JCC Faculty Student Association members. Tickets can be purchased through JCC’s box office, 716.338.1187, or online at www.campusstore.sunyjcc.edu.

The performance is sponsored by JCC’s arts, humanities, and health sciences division and college program committee.

Mark Filsinger eleventetThe Mark Filsinger Eleventet features 11 of Buffalo’s most celebrated musicians. Led by Filsinger, who teaches music at Buffalo State College, the ensemble combines the excitement and power of a big band with the creative and improvisational aspects of a jazz quartet.

Filsinger’s original compositions and arrangements include fast bebop lines, beautiful melodies, and ensemble shout choruses.

The ensemble, formed in spring 2015, has performed concerts and jazz festivals around western New York including an appearance on the main stage for the 8th Annual Queen City Jazz Festival. The group has received many accolades, including a review on jazzbuffalo.com from July 2015: “While the bands features a who’s who of jazz in WNY, what shines are the refreshing as well as stellar arrangements and compositions of Mark Filsinger.”

Performers include Bobby Militello, Dave Schiavone, Harry Fackelman, Dennis Tribuzzi, Jim Bohm, Rick Fleming, Brendan Lanighan, Bobby Jones, Jim Colemon, and Devin Kelly.

Tonight’s concert features the college choir, directed by Brian Bogey; the vocal jazz ensemble, directed by Michael Kelly, and the jazz ensemble, directed by Ralph Rasmusson – who also directs the concert band.

On May 12, the JCC rock ensembles, directed by Bill Eckstrom, will present their Spring Jam featuring rock to acoustic sets. The concert will be fully staged with sound and lighting by Steve Gustafson.
