Stepped Up DWI Enforcement Planned for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend https://www.wrfalp.com/stepped-up-dwi-enforcement-planned-for-st-patricks-day-weekend/ https://www.wrfalp.com/stepped-up-dwi-enforcement-planned-for-st-patricks-day-weekend/#respond Fri, 17 Mar 2017 13:48:23 +0000 http://www.wrfalp.com/?p=21336 MAVYILLE – Friday is St. Patricks Day and there’s a lot of fun and entertainment scheduled for the whole weekend across Chautauqua County, but those who plan to celebrate are being reminded to do so responsibly.

Chautauqua County police agencies will participate in the upcoming New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdown, a state-wide effort to crackdown on impaired driving. The crackdown will take place March 17 through March 19.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, municipal law enforcement agencies, and New York State Police will vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired. They will work together to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths, with special emphasis on driving while impaired by either alcohol or drugs.

“Removing intoxicated drivers from Chautauqua County roadways is one of our top priorities,” said Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace. “If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Drunk drivers not only put themselves in danger, they threaten everyone who shares the highway with them.”

These events are funded by a 2016-2017 grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, and is part of a national crackdown effort. Future crackdowns will take place around such holidays as Memorial Day and Fourth of July.

The Chautauqua County STOP-DWI Program is funded by drinking and driving fines collected from convicted drunk drivers.

Stepped Up Law Enforcement Announced for Super Bowl Weekend https://www.wrfalp.com/stepped-up-law-enforcement-announced-for-super-bowl-weekend/ https://www.wrfalp.com/stepped-up-law-enforcement-announced-for-super-bowl-weekend/#respond Fri, 05 Feb 2016 14:21:28 +0000 http://www.wrfalp.com/?p=17109 statepoliceALBANY – The Super Bowl is this weekend, but if you plan to go out and watch the game at a super bowl party, make sure you don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve had too much to drink.

Both the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide will be cracking down on impaired driving during Super Bowl weekend from Saturday, February 6 until midnight, February 8.

The STOP-DWI campaign will include underage drinking enforcement, along with increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify, and arrest impaired drivers.

If you are hosting, designate a responsible driver in advance to help your guests get home safely.

  • Ask all of your guests to designate their sober drivers ahead of time, or help them arrange ride-sharing with sober drivers. If you don’t drink, offer to drive guests home.
  • Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages at the party.
  • Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter—this is a good time to serve coffee and dessert.
  • Sign up online for a ride sharing service and keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from any guests who are thinking of driving after drinking.
  • Remember, if you serve a guest alcohol and he or she gets in a crash that night, you could be held liable.
  • If an underage person drinks and drives, the parent or guardian can be legally liable for any damage, injury or death caused by the underage driver.

Super Bowl 50 will feature the AFC Champion Denver Broncos against the NFC Champion Carolina. It will be played at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Opening kick off is set for 6:30 p.m. The game is being broadcast on CBS.
