As for the brand new Lucille Ball Statue, the official unveiling of the Statue by artist Carolyn Palmer will be at 11:30 a.m. in Lucille Ball Memorial Park.  Palmer was commissioned in 2015 to create a new statue following a fundraising effort by the village of Celoron to replace the village’s original Lucy statue created by sculptor David Poulin. Poulin’s statue – dubbed the “Ugly Lucy Statue” – received international notoriety in the spring of 2015 after a Facebook page entitled “We Love Lucy, Get Rid of the Statue” went viral.

Even with the new Lucille Ball statue being added to the park, village officials say that the Poulin’s statue will also remain in the park, since it has become an attraction for the village since it’s story went viral in 2015.

CELORON – The Celoron village board of trustee has selected the artist who will design and create the next Lucille Ball statue for Lucille Ball Memorial Park.

Celoron officials say the board has approved an agreement with Carolyn Palmer of Montgomery, NY to create a new bronze statue of Lucy. The statue will replace an existing statue created by regional artist Dave Poulin, which garnered international attention earlier this year due to public outcry, with critics saying it barely resembled the Queen of Comedy.

Palmer has created several bronze sculptors of noted individuals, including Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Wright Brothers. Photos of her work are available on her website.

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost said in a prepared statement,”The Village of Celoron is very grateful to Ernie Boch, Jr. and other donors who have made it possible for the Village to honor the memory of Lucille Ball in this way.”

In April of this year Schrecengost announced the village would initiate a fundraising effort to replace the statue. A selection committee was also established – consisting of local artists, a representative of the National Comedy Center and a Village resident – to review the correspondence received from sculptors who were interested in creating a new statue. In May, Mr. Boch announced he would be donating $20,000 toward the effort to ensure enough money could be raised to commission a new artist.

At a special meeting held on September 28, 2015, the Celoron board reviewed the recommendation of the committee and voted unanimously to contract with Palmer. Specific details of the contract, including the cost of hiring the artist or conceptual imaging of the completed statue, were not immediately released.

Palmer said, “Thank you for giving me this great honor. I’m truly humbled and looking forward to capturing the beauty and charm of our beloved Lucille Ball.”

The original statue is still in Lucille Ball Memorial Park and will remain there until the new one is completed.  Upon installation of the new statue the original statue will be on loan to the National Comedy Center.  Ownership will be retained by the Village of Celoron.

The village is anticipating an August 6, 2016 unveiling of the new statue.

Ernie Boch, Jr made a donation of $20,000 to the village of Celoron to help it replace a statue of Lucille Ball at Lucille Ball Memorial Park.

CELORON – A major donation has been made to assist with creating a new statue of Lucille Ball in Celoron’s Lucille Ball Memorial Park.

Village officials say a donation of $20,000 has been made by Ernie Boch, Jr. of Norwood, Massachusetts. In a media release from the village, Boch said he made the donation because he has tremendous affection for Lucy and the rest of the characters from the I Love Lucy TV show, adding that her hometown deserves the best statue possible.

Boch is the President and CEO of Subaru of New England.

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost tells WRFA he’s in the process of forming a committee to review more than 50 different artists who’ve come forward to help create the new statue. He says the committee members will be announced during the next village board meeting on June 8, with an artist excepted to be selected by the middle of the summer.

Last month the village board voted unanimously to move the current statue of Lucille Ball – created by artist Dave Poulin – from the Park to the upcoming National Comedy Center in nearby Jamestown.

Village officials are hoping to replace the statue with another that bears a more similar likeness to the comedy legend.  The Poulin Statue will have a new home at the future National Comedy Center.

That decision followed a month-and-a-half of controversy and public outcry surrounding the statue, with many asking that it be removed and a more fitting statue take its place. Critics of the statue claimed the statue looked nothing like the comedy legend and as a result, requested that it be removed.

Schrecongost also says that even with the big donation from Boch the statue fundraising project is still underway, adding that it’s important the village raise as much money as possible in order to ensure the best possible statue can be created.

To make a contribution to help in the creation of a new statue, donations can be sent to the Village of Celoron (P.O. Box 577, Celoron, NY 14720-0577), Five Star Bank or online at www.kickstarter.com, with the project title of “Lucille Ball Tribute Statue, Celoron NY.”

CELORON – The Celoron village board voted unanimously Monday to move the statue of Lucille Ball from Lucille Ball Memorial Park to the upcoming National Comedy Center in nearby Jamestown.

Monday’s vote follows a month-and-a-half of controversy and public outcry surrounding the statue, with many asking that it be removed and a more fitting statue take its place. Critics of the statue, which was created by Jamestown Sculptor Dave Poulin, claimed the statue looked nothing like the comedy legend and as a result, requested that it be removed.

After much discussion – including a special work session in April devoted to discussing the statue –  village officials made the decision to relocate the statue to the National Comedy Center, which is scheduled to be opened in August 2016.

Upon learning of the vote, National Comedy Center chairman Tom Benson made the following statement:

“We are extremely pleased with the decision made by the Celoron Board today. We are excited to embrace the statue in a different light; not as likeness of Lucille Ball, but as a tribute to what she was all about – making people laugh. This piece of comedy history has made millions of people laugh since going viral, and we look forward to working with the board of Celoron to find creative ways to showcase it in Comedy Center Park and the upcoming National Comedy Center, set to break ground during this year’s Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, and open in August 2016.”

JAMESTOWN – The fate of the Lucille Ball statue in Celoron is still up in the air, but it appears it could have a new home in Jamestown if village officials decide they no longer want it in Lucille Ball Memorial Park.

According to TWC News, on Monday National Comedy Center chairman Tom Benson told the Celoron board of trustees that the statue would have a place in the proposed National Comedy Center in downtown Jamestown.

During his talk with the board, Benson called the statue, which was created by local sculptor Dave Poulin, a piece of comedy history that is a fitting representation of what Lucille Ball was all about, which is making people laugh,

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost and the rest of the village board have already said that they want the statue to remain in the south county area, but have not decided on where it will finally be displayed.

The village is trying to raise money to create a new statue that more closely resembles the TV legend. The current statue has been the subject of much criticism for not looking anything like Lucille Ball and earlier this month there was a call by fans and residents to remove it from the park.

As part of the presentation and in exchange for the statue, the proposed comedy center has agreed to help the Village on raise the necessary money to build the new statue.

The board is expected to vote on the center’s offer on May 11.

CELORON – The Village of Celoron will keep the controversial statue of Lucille Ball in southern Chautauqua County.

During a special work session on Saturday morning, village officials agreed that the best place for the statue is here in Chautauqua County – although they also said that the Lucille Ball Memorial Park may not be the final resting place.

Mayor Scott Schrecengost said the board will be exploring a few options, including the possibility of giving it to the Lucy Desi Comedy Center and Museum or the proposed National Comedy Center. He’s hoping NCC board president Tom Benson will come in and meet with the village when the board holds it next meeting on April 27.

“we’ve got a couple of different offers on the table and we’re going to pursue them,” Schrecengost said. “Trying to work with the National Comedy Center would be one of those options. The other is to keep it in the Celoron area.”

The Lucy Statue – which has gained both national and international notoriety in recent weeks – was created by local artist Dave Poulin in 2008 as part of a real estate transaction, when he agreed to design a state of Lucille Ball in exchange for having his real estate purchase reduced. Once completed, the statue was then donated to the village of Celoron. It’s sat in the park for more than five years with little fanfare, before word of the statue and its unflattering representation of the comedy legend went viral.

The Celoron Village Board held a work session on Saturday, April 18, 2015 to discuss the future of the Lucy Statue.

The Celoron Village Board held a work session on Saturday, April 18, 2015 to discuss the future of the Lucy Statue.

Earlier this month producers of the Comedy Central Program @Midnight had come to Celoron and extended to take the statue to Hollywood and have it appear in the same studio where the I Love Lucy show was recorded. In exchange, the TV program would assist with promoting the villages fundraising effort for a new statue. However, during Saturday’s meeting, village officials agreed the statue should remain in the area.

SEEKING HELP FROM THE ARTS COMMUNITY

Schrecengost also said that he will form a committee consisting of local artists and community members to focus on creating a new statue that would replace the existing one.

Schrecengost said the committee will not only work to decide on what the statue will look like, but also who to hire to do the work.

“we definitely need to get a committee together to go through all this artwork that’s been submitted to us and get us on the right track,” Schrcengost said.

Artists interested in serving on the committee should contact the Celoron Village Board at 488-0579.

Of course, the new statute hinges on a fundraising effort by the village, which has a goal of $20,000 by mid July. Schrecengost said that fundraising process has been slow but he’s hopeful more funding will come in as the campaign continues.

“I would just ask all the people that expressed concern over the statue, I wish that if they were really that concerned that they would reach out and give us a small donation of any amount,” Schrecengost said.

HOPING TO MOVE ON TO MORE PRESSING MATTERS

During the meeting, Schrecengost also emphasized that the sooner the village comes up with a plan to address the statue, the sooner it can give its full attention to other matters.

“This  statue issue has diverted our attention from other issues that we’ve been working on,” Shrecengost told WRFA. “I felt that this meeting was necessary to provide us with some sort of direction on which way to go with the statue, but I also wanted to update the board that I am moving forward with some of the other projects we are concerned with.”

JAMESTOWN – The statue of Lucille Ball that’s garnered national and international attention in recent weeks may soon have a new home.

According to an article by Gavin Paternitti in Tuesday’s Jamestown Post-Journal, producers for the Comedy Central TV show @Midnight have expressed an interest in owning the statue.

The report says that representatives of the show were at the Celoron village board meeting on Monday and said they would help the village raise money for a new statue in exchange for the current statue being donated to the show’s studio in Los Angeles.

According to the show’s host Chris Hardwick, the Comedy Central program is recorded in the same studio that was home to I Love Lucy. The host has even started a social media campaign to raise awareness of the statue, using the hashtag #BringLucyHome.

While the board considers the offer, the PJ article also states that village officials have made the decision to commission a brand new statue through the local fundraising effort.

Last week, Celoron Mayor Scott Schregengost had initially said that the village was planning to raise money in order to “fix” the current statue – unless enough money was raised to make an entirely new one. But now it appears a new statue will be made and the original, created by Dave Poulin, will remain unchanged – although where it’s final home will be remains up in the air for the time being.

Anyone wishing to donate to the village’s statue fund can do so by making a donation to the village, Five Star Bank in Lakewood, or online via Kickstarter.com.

CELRON – The village of Celoron plans to update or replace an unflattering Lucille Ball statue that’s received national attention, but it won’t be with the help of the original artist.

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost held a media conference Tuesday morning in the village to address the recent concerns that have been raised over the statue, which has sat in the village park also bearing the comedian’s name since 2009.  Primarily, many say the statue bears no likeness at all to the comedy legend and should be replaced with a more fitting tribute.

Several members of the media, including regional and national outlets, attended the conference held on Tuesday morning.

Several members of the media, including regional and national outlets, attended the conference held on Tuesday morning.

Schrecengost said that the village had wanted to address the statue, which was created by local sculptor Dave Poulin, for some time but has been unable to do so because it didn’t want to use taxpayers money.

Poulin had initially told the village it would cost an additional $8,000 to $10,000 to fix the work. Since then, the artist has said he would do it for free, but Schrecengost said he’d prefer to go with a new artist to either fix the current statue or make an entirely new one.

However, given the recent national attention the statue has received during the past week, he felt now would be the perfect time to seek  donations to give the statue a facelift, adding that if enough money was raised, an entirely new statue could be commissioned.

“We’ve opened the donations up to $20,000,” Schrecengost said. “If we can achieve at least $15,000 we can have a full redo on the whole statue.”

Anyone wanting to contribute to the fundraising effort can do so by sending donations to:

The mayor said donations can also be made on the website www.KickStarter.com with the project title “Lucille Ball Tribute Statue, Celoron NY.” The online campaign is expected to launch on Wednesday, April 8.

A LOW, COWARDLY MOVE

A statue of Lucille Ball, created by Jamestown-based artist Dave Poulin, has been on display in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Celoron, NY since 2009.

A statue of Lucille Ball, created by Jamestown-based artist Dave Poulin, has been on display in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Celoron, NY since 2009.

Schrecengost also emphasized that donations should not be sent to other fundraising efforts that may be promoted on social media, such as the anonymously created “We Love Lucy! Get Rid of This Statue” site. That site has stated they wish to have a statue built and place in nearby Jamestown.

“It is a low, cowardly move by this person or group to attack and disgrace Lucy’s hometown in order to achieve their own agenda,” the mayor said. “It is my hope that all the Lucy fans out there are aware that Lucy lived and was raised in Celoron from a young age until he became a teen. She was actually born in Jamestown; however a very small portion of her youth was spent there.”

Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, NY and spent much of her youth growing up in the village of Celoron.

As for the statue’s origin, the mayor said it was donated as part of a real estate transaction and no one commissioned the work. He said no proofs were submitted to anyone before it was finally unveiled on Aug. 9, 2009 and everyone was shocked and agreed it wasn’t Lucy – adding that it wasn’t an issue then, but it is now.

“Former mayor [the late Jack Keeney] and myself had talked with [Poulin] about fixing the statue,” Schrecengost said. “My last conversation with him ended with him quoting between $8,000 and $10,000 to fix it, or, if we don’t like it, take it down and put it in storage.”

Schrecengost said that he has been in talks with another sculptor for at least the last six months and will most likely contact him once adequate funding has been raised in order to decide the next step in the process. He also said he will most likely create a statue committee consisting of funders and local artists to help best determine what course of action to take and to ensure a more fitting statue is the end-result.

“The statue was left up because it was in remembrance of Lucy,” Schrecengost said. “Whether or not it looked like her, ugly or not, it’s artwork.”

CELORON, NY – More details on the fate of the Lucy Statue that’s gained international attention will be revealed Tuesday morning.

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost will hold a press conference Tuesday Mornin at the village hall to discuss the statue, which was designed by local artists Dave Poulin and which was put on display in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in 2009.

For years the artwork sat quietly in the park, receiving little attention. However, interest in the statue exploded in recent days due to a social media effort have it removed, with the organizer explaining that the statue looks nothing like the queen of comedy and as a result, is not a fitting tribute.

The Facebook Page “We Love Lucy! Get rid of this statue” was created in 2012 by a Jamestown-area resident who wishes to remain anonymous. It had a small following up until last week when a Buffalo news outlet picked up on the story. Within 48 hours, the statue had gone viral, with news outlets across the country – including CNN, MTV and Good Morning America – providing coverage.

Poulin reportedly talked about the statue with a Jamestown news outlet on Monday morning, saying that he admits its not his best work and has agreed to update the statue so that it bears a more fitting resemblance to Lucy.

Tuesday’s media conference is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Village Hall, directly across the street from the park.
