Rep. Tom Reed (R-Corning)

CANANDAIGUA – Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) held his annual manufacturing summit for the 23rd congressional district Friday at Finger Lakes Community College.

The summit is designed to highlight manufacturing successes in the region, as well as allow leaders in manufacturing an opportunity to meet with one another and share ideas and concerns in order to help strengthen the manufacturing sector.

It also gave local manufacturers the opportunity to learn about resources that are available to help them grow and maintain their workforce.

“We’re having multiple panels listening to manufacturers on the front lines. Supply chains management, issues of trade and tax reform will be discussed,” Reed said during his weekly conference call earlier in the week. “As we sit on the committee and write the tax codes for America, one of the voices I’m making sure is heard is the voice for U.S. Manufacturing when it comes to our broken tax code.”

According to Congressman Reed’s Office, this year’s summit brought together national and regional manufacturing leaders and included three panels: high income employable training models, tax reform and opportunities for manufacturers, and federal policy and local business opportunities.

It was the third annual manufacturing summit that Congressman Reed has hosted. Reed serves as co-chair of the House Manufacturing Caucus.

JAMESTOWN – Chautauqua County’s representative in Congress was in Jamestown Monday to tour a local manufacturing plant and promote a new piece of legislation coming before the House later this week.

Rep. Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) was at Artone Manufacturing on Allen St. Monday morning to promote the upcoming Smart Manufacturing Leadership Act. Reed said the legislation is geared toward small and medium sized manufacturers across the country and will focus on creating programs and funding that will lead to greater efficiency and cost savings.

“It focuses on becoming more efficient, utilizing resources like our energy in a cost-effective manner, respecting sustainability, and making sure that if there are opportunities from lost revenue lines that you may see from product that may go into the landfill, giving it a reuse type of adaptation, so that you get a new revenue line from what used to be a cost,” Reed said. “That type of smart manufacturing is the wave of the future.”

Reed said that the effort has received initial bipartisan support, with both Vermont Democrat Rep. Peter Welch, who’s co-sponsored the bill, along with Ohio Democrat and Manufacturing caucus co-chair Rep. Tim Ryan.

“We are at the point where we can drop the legislation, move it forward, and see what opportunities there are to get it to the finish line, especially with the [Trump] administration,” Reed said, adding, “The administration has put a new priority on U.S. manufacturing. Also, when you look at what we’re doing on the trade side and when you talk about tax reform, which we are playing an integral part in, I think that all dovetails nicely to develop a manufacturing plan to make sure we do this in the most efficient and effective ways to make sure our manufacturers can grow and prosper.”

Congressman Reed also noted that there is no funding earmarked for the legislation. He said it first must clear the house and the senate before funding sources can be identified and set. He said the legislation will be rolled out later this week in the house, but is still currently seeking a sponsor in the Senate.

Congressman Tom Reed met Thursday morning, May 2 with officials from the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier.

JAMESTOWN _ Tax reform will need to take place if the region’s manufacturing sector is going to rebound. That was the message Thursday morning by Congressman Tom Reed, who met with members of the Manufacturer’s Association of the Southern Tier (MAST) in Jamestown for a candid discussion of the manufacturing industry’s job creation outlook.

Topics at the meeting included tax reform, utility costs, federal regulations, and workforce development – all framed around the need to get more people working.

Reed again championed tax reform and corporate tax reductions, saying that with the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world, the United States is continuing to see jobs shipped overseas. He added that a common sense, comprehensive tax reform will serve as the basis for setting manufacturers on a path toward growth.

The Corning republican also pushed again for natural gas development, calling it a “game changer” for the U.S. manufacturing industry. Reed cited a recent TIME magazine article that pointed to the fact that while the U.S. economy as a whole continues to struggle, the manufacturing industry has grown at a much faster rate with 500,000 jobs being added in the last three years.

Reed is the Co-Chair of the bipartisan House Manufacturing Caucus along with Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio.

The Corning Republican joined ohio democrat Tim Ryan on Thursday as members of the bipartisan House Manufacturing Caucus, and welcomed individuals in both the manufacturing and education sectors, who presented ideas on how the two sectors can collaborate in the future.

Reed said that as demand continues to grow for highly-skilled workers, it’s increasingly important lawmakers help bridge that gap to fill in-demand positions. He asaid that Thursday’s panel shed light on ways education and the manufacturing industry can partner to prepare students for jobs in manufacturing.

The Caucus heard from representatives from Finger Lakes Community College, BASF Corporation, the Department of Education’s Office for Vocational and Adult Education, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).

Congressman Reed said that Tuesday’s event was a great way to kick off the Manufacturing Caucus and get Members of Congress engaged in the Manufacturing industry and identify ways to maximize the industry’s growth.

Cummins Director of Governmental Relations, Emily Foster, was on hand and shared the business’s experiences in the current economic climate – stressing how the uncertainty of the national debt is impacting the company’s ability to make future economic projections.

Cummins employs more than 17,000 individuals in the United States and 1,400 in Chautauqua County.

Congressman Reed said the Manufacturing Caucus will continue to hold monthly events and briefings to educate House Members on manufacturing issues and the promotion of manufacturing in the United States.
