Officials cut the ribbon for the opening of Pearl City Clay House (January 24, 2023)

Infinity Performing and Visual Art‘s new venture, Pearl City Clay House, held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday.

Infinity Executive Director Shane Hawkins said while they offer youth programming, they often received requests to offer programming for adults, “For a long-term sustainability plan, Infinity needs to bring in more funds that aren’t grant-based or fundraising. So we thought, why not start something for adults and for families to do together that will help benefit the youth program at Infinity? So, thus the idea for Pearl City Clay House. We’ve had excellent support from funders, both federal, local, and regional, so there’s just a lot of people that went into making this a success.”

Clay House Program Director Debra Eck said a lot of different activities are available at the facility, “Starting from paint your own pottery, and going all the way up to making and firing your own pottery. We also offer workshops in contemporary crafts like felting, or embroidery, or bookbinding, or modern mending.”

Eck said there also is a gallery space that can be rented out for events that includes a kitchen and its own restrooms.

She added they will be doing a special craft for Doors Open this Saturday, January 28 where people can paint a tile or make their own clay fortune cookie.

Pearl City Clay House is located at 220 East Second Street.

William Waite, Biosemiotics: Where the Red Fern Grows, mixed media on canvas, 2019

JAMESTOWN – A reception celebrating the works of several current and former Jamestown Community College faculty members will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12 in JCC’s Weeks Gallery.

The event, free and open to the public, will include refreshments.

The exhibition is on display until October 17. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, and by appointment.

The artists will discuss the works in the show at noon on September 18. Coinciding with the exhibition will be a noontime poetry reading on October 2 featuring JCC faculty members Gerry Crinnin, Neil Flory, Justin March, Chris Munde, and Karen Weyant.

Viewers will see works ranging from abstraction to naturalism. Large abstract painting by Richard Minard and Heather Kanazawa suggest the inspiration of nature. Yu Kanazawa and Ray Bonilla, who work in a naturalist style, focus their works on scenes from everyday life.

William Disbro presents decorative and colorful collaged landscapes pieced together from hand-painted paper while works by William Waite depict poetic illustrations of woodlands with mystical qualities. A series of photographs featuring close-up views of a frozen pond in winter are presented by Mark Kirsch.

Sculptural and two-dimensional works on paper by Debra Eck make use of natural dyes, hand sewn lines, and prints drawn from plants grown in the artist’s garden.

Japanese drumming group TaikoProject will perform Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. The performance is 95 minutes long with a fifteen minute intermission.

One of the world’s premier taiko drumming ensembles, the ensemble uses the dynamic Japanese, community-based tradition of taiko drumming and incorporates high energy dance and movement to expand artistic boundaries. This dynamic concert contrasts the power and excitement of traditional Japanese drums with the subtle melodic accompaniment and nuance of the Japanese harp, bamboo flute and marimba.

Taiko drumming is an ancient form of percussion using large drums. The modernization of this form developed throughout last century incorporating choreographed movements and ensemble work. This form of music was most recently heard at The Reg when the Japan-set animated film Isle of Dogs was shown in the spring. TaikoProject, formed in 2000 has incorporated Western elements into the traditional form and has performed and recorded with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and Kanye West. TaikoProject is sponsored by Comfort Inn of Jamestown.

Tickets start at $5 for children and $10 adults. Pay What You Can tickets will be available at the door when the box office opens at 6 p.m.

Tickets to TaikoProject may be purchased in person at 3rd on 3rd Gallery Tuesday through Saturday during operating hours and in the Reg Lenna box office one hour prior to movies and events. Tickets may also be purchased over the phone at 716.484.7070 and online at RegLenna.com.

Upcoming Women Create Exhibit Issues Call for Work https://www.wrfalp.com/women-create-issues-call-for-work/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=women-create-issues-call-for-work https://www.wrfalp.com/women-create-issues-call-for-work/#respond Fri, 02 Oct 2015 17:47:46 +0000 http://www.wrfalp.com/?p=15533 JAMESTOWN, NY – Women Create invites women to submit work for consideration for its third biennial juried exhibit of women’s art in downtown Jamestown, New York.

Applications are being accepted from women of all ages in any art medium, and artists from Western New York, Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Northeastern Ohio are encouraged to apply. Deadline for applications is Tuesday, December 15, 2015. Artists will be notified of the juror’s decisions during the week of February 1, 2016.

Internationally exhibited artist, curator and educator Debra Eck and photographer and blogger Jennifer Schlick are creative directors for Women Create. They will be assisted by mixed media artist Katherine Turnquist. Artist Audrey Dowling, the owner and operator of the Portage Hill Gallery in Westfield, New York, who has juried and curated many shows, is the juror for the exhibit.

“Women Create was a resounding success in both 2012 and 2014,” said Schlick. “The caliber of the artwork that was submitted and the pieces that were selected for display were outstanding, and the overwhelming number of visitors to the exhibit made it all worthwhile. We are truly excited to see what 2016 brings!”

Accepted artists will be required to deliver or ship their pieces to the gallery ready to hang or install. As the Dykemann-Young is a commercial gallery, accepted work must be available for sale.

The opening reception for the exhibit will be on Friday, April 15, 2016, and it will run through Saturday, May 14. A series of salons with the presenting artists will take place in the gallery during that time.

Keeping in mind that jurying an art show is inherently a subjective process, previous applicants whose work was not selected are encouraged to apply again.

More information and complete guidelines for applying for the Women Create exhibit are on the Women Create website, www.womencreate.org.
