STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdown Runs from July 1 through July 4

July 1, 2016 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

Chautauqua County SheriffMAYVILLE – One of the biggest holidays of the year has arrived. With this year’s Fourth of July falling on a Monday, it makes for a long holiday weekend and there’s sure to be plenty of events and activities for all to enjoy over the next few days.

But local authorities are reminding area residents and visitors that they need to be responsible while celebrating Independence Day, adding that there will be stepped up road enforcement this weekend to ensure it’s a safe holiday for everyone.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says local law enforcement will be participating in the New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdown beginning today and continuing through Monday, July 4.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff, municipal law enforcement agencies, and New York State Police will vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired. They will work together to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths, with special emphasis on driving while impaired by either alcohol or drugs.

“Removing intoxicated drivers from Chautauqua County roadways is one of our top priorities,” said Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace. “If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Drunk drivers not only put themselves in danger, they threaten everyone who shares the highway with them.”

The Sheriff’s office says a similar crackdown took place during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which resulted in four (4) arrests for driving while intoxicated, and 112 other vehicle stops, arrests, and summonses.

Funding for the crackdown is provided by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation through a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
