FREDONIA – A large roundabout willbe coming to one of the busiest intersections in Chautauqua County in 2017.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host a public information meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed intersection improvements at the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and N.Y. Route 60, in Fredonia.
The public meeting will be held in the Trustees’ Room at the Fredonia Village Hall, located at 9 Church Street, in the village of Fredonia.
The meeting will be an open forum format, whereby individuals can arrive at any time from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed project and the tentative schedule. Department of Transportation representatives will be available to receive comments and answer individual questions. A formal presentation will be given at 6 p.m.
The purpose of the safety improvement project is to replace the existing signalized intersection at Routes 20 and 60 with a roundabout. DOT Officials also want to install raised median barrier on the approaches to the intersection that currently have multiple driveways. Other improvements include improved pedestrian facilities and drainage.
The project is currently scheduled to be out for bid in fall 2017.
For further information about the project or questions about the public meeting, call (716) 847-3230.

LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE! Craziest idea I ever heard. To put a roundabout in an area where people do not know how to use them can only result in trouble. The one in Hamburg has been terrible for a couple of years and people still don’t get it! I have seen them successfully used in Europe where people have been using them for decades, maybe centuries. Not for here! I find nothing wrong with what we have in place right now. Millions of dollars will be saved. Use the money to repair some unsafe bridges that NYS has plenty of.

This discussion is already decided. Why would anyone appear to discuss this?
My comment is too leave the intersection as it is. If change is needed then perhaps the traffic lights can be timed longer for right or left turns to be made. Then extend the time for thru traffic. If drivers cannot use a traffic light properly then I highly doubt this roundabout will be a better solution. The State of New York isn’t necessarily the smartest when it comes to traffic solutions just because they say the roundabout is the solution.

Round abouts can be a good thing but….a community that is not use to useing them and then making one this size is a recipe for disaster. I live in a town and they are everyplace and they can be helpful for traffic flow. But this intersection will need to be two or more lanes. And semi trucks need to get around also…wow i’d think this through before just passing it…..maybe build one on cental ave next to the collage first and let people get use to one before jumping in……
