A March 28 Facebook Post from Senator Cathy Young, critical of an upcoming proposal to allow for supervised injection sites for heroin addicts.

ALBANY – State Senator Cathy Young has gone on record as being against a proposal to legalize injection sites for heroin users, which would allow them to use the drug under medical supervision.

The proposal, which was first brought forward by the mayor of Ithaca last month, has also been endorsed by a New York City Assemblywoman, Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan), who says she plans to introduce legislation that would legalize injection sites throughout New York State. Rosenthal is the chair the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

Senator Young, a Republican who represents Chautauqua County, posted on her Facebook page Wednesday, saying, “I will fight this terrible idea. Taxpayer-funded drug dens will only worsen the heroin crisis and would be a colossal waste of money.”

Instead, Young said the best approach is to tackle prevention and treatment and prosecute dealers to the fullest extent.

Young isn’t the fist local officials to voice opposition to the idea of a legal heroin injection site. At the end of February, Jamestown Police Chief Harry Snellings also commented on the proposal, saying it was something he would never support.
