MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Department of Social Services has drawn up a plan that would require the addition of 16 new employees to help improve the county’s Welfare-to-Work participation rate. That from a report in the Jamestown Post-Journal over the weekend, which states Social Services Director Christine Schuyler has finalized an action plan that states it would cost the county over $500,000 in local money to implement the plan, which was requested by lawmakers last month after the county showed a lower-than-average participation rate for the welfare-to-work program, when compared to other counties throughout the state. The total cost to implement the plan would be $1.17 million.
County lawmakers feel an increasing number of residents on social service programs is draining county tax dollars and would like to see an initiative that puts more of them to work and eventually off the welfare rolls. The action plan is expected to be discussed during the legislature’s Human Services Committee meeting on June 20.
