Chautauqua County’s representative in Congress is helping to introduce a bipartisan bill that would create a regional network of manufacturing institutes across the country.

On Friday, Congressmen Tom Reed (R-Corning) joined democrat Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) in announcing the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (RAMI). The bill creates a network of regional institutes across the country designed to commercialize research and development into manufactured products, train an advanced manufacturing workforce, and support manufacturers of all sizes.

According to Reed, the goal of the bill is revitalize American manufacturing, which he says is a major key to revitalizing the country’s economy.

The network would be funded through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Institutes are chosen for participation based on a merit-based review process.

A companion bill was also introduced in the Senate.
