MORNING NEWS: Jamestown to Celebrate National Train Day on Saturday, May 11

May 10, 2013 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

trainstationThe Jamestown Gateway Train Station has announced today it will be participating in National Train Day. This will be a significant event honoring the history of railroading in Jamestown, New York as well as the entire country. According to Train Station Director Lee Harkness, this is a national celebration.

In addition to the actual celebration the Jamestown Train Station will be open for inspection and tours. The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad will have actual rolling stock and equipment on sight for questions and viewing.

There will be train displays and exhibits, along with work cars and artwork. Railroad author Kenneth Springirth will make presentations on railroading in Jamestown, western New York and the Northeast. Author Chuck Spinner will attend to address “The Tragedy of Loomis Street Crossing.”

Others participating in the event include the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad, the Western New York Railroad Historical Society, and the Buffalo Cattaraugus and Jamestown Scenic Railway Company Inc. Exhibitors and railroad enthusiasts are all invited to participate.

The original construction of the Jamestown Gateway Train Station was completed in 1932, by the Erie Railroad, as an elegant structure supporting the importance of railroads. The last passenger train left the Jamestown Station in 1970 letting it fall into disrepair until renovations started in May of 2010. Renovations were completed with a ribbon cutting in October of 2012.

The Jamestown celebration will be held at the newly renovated former Erie Lackawanna Train Station located at 212-217 West Second Street tomorrow from 10 am to 5 pm.
