MORNING NEWS: Community Gathers to Remember Brocton Teenager

September 19, 2013 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

BROCTON – More than 1500 people gathered in the small village of Brocton Wednesday night to remember the teenager who died on Monday, three days after being injured during a high school football game.

The Jamestown Post-Journal is reporting that a large crowd gathered at the football field at Brocton Central School to attended a candlelight vigil in honor of 16 year old Damon Janes. The vigil was organized primarily classmates.

Janes was rushed to a Buffalo area hospital after receiving a severe head injury Friday Night during a varsity football game in Portville. It is said he lost consciousness shortly after a helmet-to-helmet collision in the third quarter. He remained in critical condition over the weekend and died Monday.

The community will continue to rally behind the Janes family in the coming days and weeks.  A second gathering on the Brocton football field for Damon will take place this Friday at 7 p.m. During the ceremony, Sky lanterns can be purchased for $3 each, with proceeds benefiting the Janes family.

In addition to numerous other fundraising events organized in Damon’s honor, the Buffalo Bills fan club has also organized a fundraiser for the Janes family. More information can be found online at www.billsmafia.com.

According to the Post-Journal, the funeral service for Janes will be held on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Lakeshore Assembly of God in Westfield.  Calling hours will take place at the Morse Funeral Home in Brocton today from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

The family suggests memorials be made to any branch of Community Bank where a memorial fund has been set up under the title Damon Janes Memorial Fund.
