MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Legislature’s Public Facilities Committee has once again reviewed and approved a policy resolution aimed at improving the safety of local roadways for non-motor vehicle traffic, such as bicycles and pedestrians.
Under the proposed Complete Streets policy, the county department of public facilities would be required s to consider various modes of travel whenever putting together designs for a new road project.
In April, the county legislature was to act on the policy, but it was tabled due to concern over wording about excluded projects.
In May, the public facilities committee reviewed the resolution, but it was tabled again due to incomplete information.
This week, committee members passed the resolution to adopt the Complete Streets policy, with no changes to the initial drafted resolution.
According to an article in the Jamestown Post-Journal, he Complete Streets policy would not apply in situations where projects are limited to resurfacing, locations where bicyclists or pedestrians are prohibited by law, or the cost would be disproportionate to the need.
The resolution will go before the full County Legislature for a vote on June 24.
