JAMESTOWN – Thursday, Aug. 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day across the country and a series of events are scheduled to take place throughout the day at Jamestown Community College.

Highlighting the day’s events is a free community screening of the film “Heroin: Cape Cod USA,” a documentary that follows eight people in their 20s as they battle addiction.

The film will be shown for free at the Scharmann Theatre starting at 6 p.m., with a remembrance of loved ones lost to the overdose epidemic following the screening.  A Performance by local poet Autumn Echo and Chautauqua Hospice Bereavement Coordinator Jamie Probst will guide the remembrance.

Other events occurring during the day include a resource fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the JCC Student Union and a Narcan Training session from 4-5 p.m. in the JCC Carnahan Theater.

Evergreen Health provides medical, supportive and behavioral services throughout the Western New York area. The syringe exchange program helps to decrease the spread of viral infections like HIV and Heptatitis C, as well as prevent drug overdose.
