MAYVILLE – After some comments on both issues, lawmakers last night also approved two motions asking the state to provide support to two Western New York businesses – one that is involved with healthcare and the other, which is involved with energy generation and distribution.
The first motion calls on Governor Andrew Cuomo to continue state funding for Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Prior to voting on the measure, legislator Keith Ahlstrom of Dunkirk said that while he considers Roswell to be a true jewel for Western New York, he fault the legislature should instead focus its attention on asking for the state to help bail out NRG in Dunkirk, or to assist with the county home.
Following his comments, several other legislators talked about the personal value and connection Roswell Park has with county residents – with both Larry Barmore (R-Gerry) and Vince Horrigan (R-Bemus Point) stating they personally have or are currently using the services at Roswell. Following discussion, the motion was approved by a vote of 22 to 3.
Lawmakers also approved a motion calling for the continued cooperation between the state of new york, the city of Dunkirk and NRG Energy Inc. to prevent a shutdown of the Dunkirk Power Plant. NRG is the largest tax contributor in Chautauqua County and lawmakers are fearful of the impact a shutdown would have on the county’s future revenue.
