The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s office says a city man lost his life due to drowning in the waters of Lake Erie while swimming off a break wall in the town of Westfield.
Deputies say 24-year-old John Penhollow was swimming Friday afternoon with two friends in Barcelona Harbor in a restricted area between two break walls. Rescue crews were called to the area just before 4:30 p.m. when Penhollow didn’t come back up to the water surface. His body was recovered around 6:30 p.m.
The area of Barcelona harbor has been known to have a strong undercurrent and has claimed lives in the past due to drowning, which is why the area is restricted from swimming.
