JAMESTOWN – A Jamestown man is in the county jail for illegal possession of a handgun that was stolen from Pennsylvania.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says 25 year-old Travis Terry of Jamestown was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree during a traffic stop in Sinclairville on Aug. 20. At that time Terry was found to be in possession of 9mm pistol which had a defaced serial number. He was initially charged with illegal possession of a weapon.
Since then, Chautauqua County Crime Scene Investigators were able to restore the defaced serial numbers and found that it had been stolen from Pennsylvania.
On Thursday a warrant for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property was signed by the Town of Charlotte Justice and Terry was located and arrested at a residence in Jamestown.
Police did not indicate if the stolen gun was one of dozens that had been stolen from a Central Pennsylvania gun shop earlier in June and destined to be sold in Jamestown.
